ITVX has released a series of new images of The Winter King, a bold and revisionist take on the well-loved Arthurian legends, based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series.
The series will have its UK TX on the 21st and 27th of December 2023.
Further photos were released of Iain De Caestecker (The Control Room, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) and Stuart Campbell (SAS Rogue Heroes, Clique) in Caer Cadarn, the stronghold at the heart of Uther’s kingdom of Dumnonia.
The photos also give a first look of key cast including:-
Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie, The Crown) as Owain, one of Arthur’s closest friends.
Valene Kane (The Fall, Gangs of London) as Morgan, Arthur’s sister.
Andrew Gower (Outlander, Carnival Row) as Sansum, Bishop Bedwin’s fanatical novice.
Simon Merrells (Good Omens, Knightfall) as Gundleus, king of rival kingdom Siluria.
Arthur’s brothers in arms: Ken Nwosu (Killing Eve, The Letter for the King) as Sagramor, and Matt Mella (Trigger Point) as Lanval.
Olumide Olorunfemi (Venom: Let There Be Carnage) as Lunete, Derfel’s childhood friend.
“The show has a visual flare that can only be brought to it by someone like director Otto Bathurst who established Peaky Blinders,” said Daniel Ings (Owain). “My character is fairly unhinged at points – he’s seen things that left scars on his psyche. Otto puts a lot of trust in his actors, which really makes you want to deliver for him.”
Commissioned for ITVX by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, The Winter King is produced by Sony Pictures Television-owned Bad Wolf, and filming took place in Wales and the West Country, with the series premiering on ITVX later this year. Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders, His Dark Materials) serves as lead director and executive producer, alongside Toby Leslie.
Kate Brooke (Bancroft, A Discovery of Witches) and Ed Whitmore (Silent Witness, Manhunt) adapted Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles and also act as executive producers. Julie Gardner (Doctor Who, I Hate Suzie), Lachlan MacKinnon (Industry, A Discovery of Witches) and Jane Tranter (His Dark Materials, Succession) serve as executive producers with Sherry Marsh (Pose, Vikings).
Shelley Browning and Kenneth L. Browning are also executive producers and the drama is produced by Catrin Lewis Defis for Bad Wolf, in association with One Big Picture. Sony Pictures Television is distributing The Winter King worldwide.
