Bad Wolf was founded in 2015 to create ambitious, imaginative and relevant drama for the global TV marketplace. From its headquarters in South Wales the company has built up an international reputation as one of the foremost independent production companies in the UK, producing over 70 hours of high-end drama for broadcasters and networks including HBO, BBC, AMC and Sky.
In the last 9 years Bad Wolf has brought many of the world’s most renowned producers, directors and actors to Wales to collaborate on ground-breaking TV productions. This has run in parallel with a firm commitment to the creative sector in Wales to build and strengthen the growing creative community through wide-ranging partnerships and training initiatives.
Since launching, shows including The Night Of (HBO), His Dark Materials (HBO/BBC), A Discovery Of Witches (Sky / AMC Networks), Industry (HBO / BBC) and I Hate Suzie (Sky / HBO Max) have all gone on to achieve global recognition and win multiple awards at the BAFTA, BAFTA Cymru, RTS, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.
The formation of Bad Wolf was the result of over 15 years of creative collaboration between founders Jane Tranter, Julie Gardner and the production and creative community of Wales.
The Bad Wolf story began when Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner made the decision with showrunner Russell T Davies to base Doctor Who in Cardiff. This was the spark that led to a drama renaissance in the Welsh television industry, that saw Torchwood, Sherlock, Merlin and Casualty all locate and shoot in the Welsh capital to build the creative community that continues to this day.
After relocating to Los Angeles to lead BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions, Jane and Julie continued to produce innovative TV, from Emmy-nominated comedy drama Getting On for HBO, to three seasons of the award-winning series Da Vinci’s Demons for Starz.
Just as the ninth Doctor’s companion Rose Tyler scattered a message to the Doctor as ‘Bad Wolf’ throughout time and space, the Bad Wolf team has sent a message to the world that Wales is a centre of creative excellence, built around a vibrant production industry.
Enjoying a strong partnership and launched with support from Welsh Government, Bad Wolf has also founded and supported Wolf Studios Wales, a world class production facility in Cardiff, and Screen Alliance Wales, an education and training scheme to engage with emerging talent to grow, nurture and build skills across the creative industries.
In December 2021 Sony Pictures Television acquired a majority stake in Bad Wolf to become partners in the company’s next phase of international growth.
